I was hesitant to buy this book but I decided to take a chance on it and was mildly surprised that it was a relatively good and fun book to read. The style of writing of Greig Beck reminds me of Matthew Riley and his Mitch Rapp series. And a little bit of Preston/Child's "The Ice Limit."

The characters were great, the action quick and the gore held down to a nice level where you didn't gross out. Very descriptive writing when the characters were deep in the cave and it made it easy to visualize their surroundings. The only thing I was wondering about at the end of the book was what happened to the Alex and Aimee and there wasn't any further mention of Matt and the loss of his love interest. I think one more chapter to clear up those lines of the story would have been nice. But the last chapter was a nice surprise.

Not bad at all. Alex Hunter, bad--s marine (or HAWC’s as they are referred to in the book) with a interesting twist making him a bit more than a “ordinary” commando solder. This caught my interest fairly early on in the book.

They are sent on a rescue mission deep under the Antarctic ice where the discover…well you have to read the book to learn what they discovered but I found it quite a good read and not exactly what I had expected. The team consists not only of Alex’s fellow commandos but also of a bunch of researchers out of which one of them is the typical tiresome a--hole that you just hoped would get “disposed of”. Preferably as painfully as possible.

Just to complicate things further the author throws in a competing Russian command team lead by a sadistic psychopath with a grudge against Alex. Actually I felt this was a bit over the top. The rest of the story was good enough to keep my interest.

The basic story is a fairly classical one of team-goes-into-confined-area-not-all-of-them-comes-out. As a matter of fact, quite a few of them doesn’t come out. The story is well written though and has enough interesting elements to not give you a yet-another-one-of-those feelings when reading it.

I am fairly sure that I will give, at least, the next one in the series a go as well.
The best part of this book is the scientific propositions put forth by several of the actors. It was fun to read about how a cave explorer goes about squeezing through tiny tunnels with no idea what will be on the other side--and has the equipment to go just about anywhere. Monica the caver was supremely confident and demonstrated her competence again and again. I was fascinated by the descriptions of the under-the-ice world which came across to me as perfectly believable--except, of course finding a gigantic ancient city. Oh, yes, there was the superman leading the group. I suppose if it took taking a bullet to my brain to make me into that kind of guy I guess I'd do it.
Having said that, the conflict between the sneering, snide doctor and the beautiful expert was a bit trite; I was hoping that nothing good would happen to him, but you'll have to read the book to find out.
Having said all that, I was disappointed to find that there was no reference anywhere about anyone making a permanent photographic record of this incredible journey. With all the high tech gadgetry the HAWC team was packing you'd think that someone would at least have a smartphone! There were some other pieces that didn't fit too well, but all in all it was a good read and I'll be getting more of this author's books.
Alex Hunter was shot in the head by a Russian assassin and survived. That gave him extraordinary mental and physical abilities by supercharging a large area of his brain which is normally dead space, function less, and unused in other human brains. The book is about an ancient hidden world underneath the antarctic. The main creature was a squid-like creature, Qwotoan. Alex Hunter and his team were being chased through a maze of underground tunnels by Qwotoan and numerous other bizarre creatures such as 30 ft giant worms. At the same time the Russian assassin was chasing them through the underground caves. This was absolute fantasy fiction, but it was combined with a lot of accurate technical descriptions and facts about mythology, classes of animals, nematodes, magnetite, cave systems around the world, thermite explosives, blue ice, and lots of weapons. For example thermocline is a steep temperature gradient in a body of water such as a lake, marked by a layer above and below which the water is at different temperatures, and the coelacanth is a large, bony marine fish with a three-lobed tail fin and fleshy pectoral fins which was known only from fossils until one was found alive in 1938. I plan to read the next book in the Alex Hunter series, but first I want to read a traditional mystery novel.
I got about half-way through and thought it was pretty average for this kind of book. I just got past the part where the bad guys cause a cave in and the good guys are trapped on the other side.
They don't know how many bad guys there are and that are being attacked by a monster.
They have to " travel light" so, they leave behind their collapsible weapons. These weapons fire air balls ( no ammo to carry) and these "super soldiers" leave them behind and just take pistols.
That was when I had enough.
If this had been a good book, I would read his other stuff. That is not going to happen.
