Duncan Wilde is one of the founders of Lost and Found, a security agency located in Denver, Colorado. Lately it seems like most of his employees and partners are getting bit by the love bug and starting families of their own. Now, he won't admit it, but a certain red-headed doctor grabbed his attention a while back-and that's surprising since Duncan shut himself down a long time ago after his fiancée dumped him while he was hospitalized with injuries. So what if the gorgeous doc lives in another state and is way too young for his grumpy self? A guy can dream, right?

Duncan is like the Rock of Gibraltar, steady and reliable. He's the one everyone calls when they need an ear to talk to, a shoulder bump for encouragement, or just good old-fashion company to sit with. But losing so many men on the battlefield and dealing with his own insecurities/injuries has left him guarded in his personal life. I don't think he's leery of commitment, he's just not willing to put himself out there to be hurt again. Then Alex comes along and shakes up his orderly world with her vibrant personality..well, just sit back and enjoy the ride!

I don't know what to say with so many things happening in this book! A few couples share big surprises, there's a small suspense plot involving a favorite character, a couple of medical emergencies, and of course, the babies! Best surprise of the entire story!

I feel like I've waited FOREVER for Duncan to get his story but it was well worth it! Madden ties up a great series with fireworks, and it's one you don't want to miss! I'd recommend any of the books in Madden's Lost and Found series (Zeke is my personal favorite). They may be read individually, but I suggest reading in order to fully appreciate the series in general.

I've been waiting for Duncan's story and Ms Madden did not disappoint. Oh boy, did she delivered a fantastic book! Duncan and Alex's story is captivating, heartwarming, and touching; it's so realistic I wanted to actually go and smack him on his head once (not a very clever idea, given his skill set, I know). All the guys from LNF's got their time to tell their bits and update us where they are, and given the warning at the beginning of the book I really worried about Shannon and John Palmer. Ms Madden is such a gifted writer that my thoughts at some moments were like "Oh, no-no! If the awful M-thing happens, we need to be prepared to mitigate the fall-out" and mental planning went along, as if they are real people who somehow's become a part of my life.
I totally loved the book;
Really disappointed in Duncan's story, he consistently wavered back and forth with his feelings about Alex . She wasn't any better. How many time does a man have to tell you to get lost before you show a little pride. While it was nice to read about John and Shannon, Chad and Lora I purchased this because I believed it was Duncan's story.
It is so satisfying to see such a good man as Duncan Wilde finally find some real happiness. What a great end to an excellent series. I won't recap the plot as others have already done a great job with that. What I WILL do is tell you that one of the things that I absolutely adore about J.M.'s writing is that she crafts characters that are real and relatable facing real and relatable challenges. I connect with these people like they are my friends and family, I respect them and admire them with all their little flaws. I can't emphasize enough how wonderful it is to have a 'go to' author who doesn't inflict billionaire BDSM dungeon masters on us. (If I never see another one of those ludicrous story lines again I will be very happy.) Instead she gives us well rounded characters with emotional depth, senses of humor and kindness that work their way towards hard won, long lasting love. Her characters are people I can understand and root for, they are never petty or immature or needlessly cruel or too stupid to live. I highly recommend giving J.M.'s books a try. They are a real breath of fresh air in the romance genre, particularly if you enjoy reading about some awesome service men and women.
Embattled Ever After is the first book by Ms Madden that I didn’t enjoy. It was bound to happen at some point and it won’t prevent me from reading her books again. Imho, Alex and Duncan did not feature as prominently in *their* story as they should have. A lot of time was spent on other couples and setting up the next series with Aiden. Two important issues were tackled in EEA (PTSD and a women's health issue), both of which require an author to maintain a fine balance. While this balance was attained in previous books as related to the PTSD topic, it was notably absent here. If I was new to the series and randomly started with this book I fear that I would have been lost because so much time (too much) was spent catching up with characters from previous books. Don’t get me wrong, I love to get glimpses into where beloved characters are now…but not when it pulls valuable time away from the story that I’m currently reading. Duncan is the backbone of LNF and is respected and loved by his colleagues and friends. As such, he deserves his own story and not to appear as a supporting character in his own book. Picking nits here, this is also the cover that I liked the least. I waited a few days before writing this review because I want it to be fair…and I also wanted to stop mentally comparing it to Embattled Minds (Zeke and Ember’s story) which is, hands down, my favorite book in this series.

So, in short order 5-for heat (Ms. Madden is consistently exceptional in this area), 4-for updates on characters from previous books, 3-for character development, 2-for ability to pull me in and 1-for overall story…ergo, 3-stars.

Even though I didn’t like it, the worst book in this series is far better than some other romances (military or not) out there so it’s worth a try. Just don’t judge the series or the author based on this one. Ms. Madden is worth reading, period.
